Artists Band Together to Survive, Expand Dallas' Horizon
Theatre Gallery has been open a month and a half and has already made itself one of the most talked about galleries in town.
The Gallery occupies the front of a building at 2808 Commerce in the Heart of Deep Ellum. In the back, a stage is
under construction. Starting next month, says Russell Hobbs, the theater will
offer "avant-garde drama" and live music. Hobbs, an interior designer, is the gallery's owner. A friend of Hobbs, Tracy Smith, will direct the theatre operation...
...Two of them [artists], Jamie Heidt and Jennifer Hoffecker, were restoring an armoire for a North Dallas boutique when they met Hobbs, who was doing some design work for the boutique. Heidt was looking for a studio and Hobbs, who had just leased the Commerce Street building, invited him to drop by with some of his paintings.
He did, and when he saw the space, he saw possibilities. Heidt suggested Hobbs put in an art gallery. And Heidt had just the artists in mind. |
